<br />
<br />
“WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD”<br />
<br />
I took my son and his friends to see the movie Southpaw. It was a great movie where each punch felt like I did when I had Acid Reflux.<br />
<br />
The movie was about a championship fighter who lost just about everything. His wife was killed, lost his daughter and his wealth - all because he couldn’t control himself.<br />
<br />
Upon leaving I asked my son and his friend what could be learned from the movie? The answers were the following;<br />
1. How anger could cause problems.<br />
2. Making bad decisions gets the results you don’t want.<br />
3. How important family is<br />
<br />
While these were excellent points I made a few of my own, which were;<br />
1. Bad decisions limit your choices. Every bad decision makes the next one more difficult.<br />
2. Being angry lowers you IQ, again leading to bad choices.<br />
3. Do the small things right the big things tend to take care of themselves. When Billy started making good decisions things started to work out. Is that only in movies? I think not.<br />
<br />
The movie is basically about a boxer who makes one bad choice in an instance and his life starts to spin out of control.<br />
<br />
As the bad decisions started to take hold you could see his choices were dramatically limited till he had very little control because his choices became less and less.<br />
<br />
So how does the movie Southpaw teach you anything about Acid Reflux and your health?<br />
Just like the star in the movie #JakeGyllenhaal started out as a fighter who had all the wonderful trapping of success then went downhill, so is the person who had no Acid Reflux and doesn’t address the issue.<br />
<br />
By the limiting of options, which starts with poor food choices, weight gain, eat big meals, go to bed to close to eating, etc. Low and behold Heartburn starts with a cough, then it progresses to burning in the chest once or twice a week and finally symptoms presents itself 2-3 times a week and before you know the person has full-blown GERD.<br />
<br />
While I don’t want to go into what Billy Hope, the star of Southpaw, did I do want to describe the fight back from Acid Reflux.<br />
<br />
Once you have GERD you are in a world of hurt, just like Billy. How to you come back from painful nights of not being able to sleep?<br />
<br />
The second lesson is do the small things right the big things tend to take care of themselves. The easiest thing to do is take a pill, that’s a good start if your doctor agrees.<br />
The next things will be education and a litany of things your doctor will tell you that will make your head spin.<br />
<br />
You are not going to be able to take it all in at once, let alone implement his instructions right away. However keep one thing in mind, what you can do is lift the head of the bed, it could be the easiest small thing you could do to take care of the big problem of acid reflux. Lifting the head of the bed using a mattress could be an absolute game changer that can reverse the spiral and start to give you more choices.<br />
<br />
Why is this so important? Lifting the head of the bed adds gravity to hold down the stomach content, and if it should escape the stomach it will drain quicker.<br />
<br />
The key is simplicity. If you did what I did which was nothing because there were no under mattress bed wedges you will suffer until you had enough. However over 10 years later you need not suffer, you could just <a href="http://www.refluxguard.com/how-it-works" target="_blank">click here</a> and take the first step in doing the first small thing to make the big things in your life work.<br />
<br />
Good night, sleep tight, don’t let Acid Reflux bite!<br />

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">As evidenced by this picture, news has it that Sen. Marco Rubio and the Prime Minister of Israel toasted over water. Originally it was thought that it was an American conspiracy. Could this be the new Middle East (Poland) Spring? The world seems to be coming apart over water, not oil - but could you imagine, water? </span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Now the word is getting out that drinking water cools the esophagus, dilutes acid, and helps in getting Acid Reflux sufferers some measure of relief. While we know this is true of chewing gum, it seems water and diet could also have a profound effect on reducing Acid Reflux.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Could losing weight be next? Could water be the magic elixir? Could this conspiracy be perpetrated by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to make the world healthier by cutting out soda and making sure people don’t smoke?</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Whenever I complain about not feeling well, the first thing my doctor asks is “Are you drinking enough water?” I see he is in on the conspiracy also. First drugs, now water; where do the tentacles of the conspiracy lead? Is the AMA now leading the charge? The hospitals may rebel too. If water is the magic drug, who will need hospitals? I’m thinking Reflux Guard should partner with the hospitals – if people don’t suffer and have a Reflux Guard, who will need hospitals? Oy Vey.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: small;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: small;">

Here at RefluxGuard.com we view everything through the lens of how we can alleviate Acid Reflux. So when Senator Marco Rubio responded to President Obama’s State of the Union Address and reached for Poland Spring did it create the New Watergate, or was it just to sooth his parched throat from Acid Reflux?<br />
<br />
<a href="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS1TyrOu3BSFV69-bX6x1l1s3W7CYC-Qi0d9Ew4KsuRpFxiwm1t" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS1TyrOu3BSFV69-bX6x1l1s3W7CYC-Qi0d9Ew4KsuRpFxiwm1t" style="cursor: move;" /></a><br />
<br />
President Obama and Marco Rubio were both outlining to their closest friends what gives our country Acid Reflux. Jobs is the number one issue -- this we all know as fact. Each in his own way has a plan to alleviate the problem.<br />
<br />
President Obama gives a list of all the things we need to invest in from infrastructure projects to renewable energy which, he claims, “will not cost us a dime.” That’s like my saying have a happy thick fatty juicy burger from the Heart Attack Grille (where recently two of their spokesman had heart attacks) and don’t worry about Acid Reflux. Maybe the President knows something we don’t. When that burger goes down, boy does it feel good, but when it comes up, that shooting burning feeling needs Reflux Guard© to come to the rescue.<br />
<br />
On the other hand, there is Senator Rubio. Was he just thirsty or did he develop heartburn from what he heard? Was Senator Rubio giving the American people his own receipt for a Heart Attack Burger, or was he subtly telling us “Drink a lot of water and we will reduce our healthcare costs?”<br />
<br />
To quote Elvis Presley, “Suspicious Minds” would ask is there something more sinister going on? Was this the subtle ploy by Poland Spring a move to muscle in on <a href="http://www.refluxguard.com/" target="_blank">Reflux Guard©</a>’s turf by conspiring with Senator Rubio to eliminate Acid Reflux without medication? Such are the subtle ploys special interest groups utilize to get their way.<br />
<br />
Personally I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, even though Dr. Phil says in his new book Life Code (New Rules for Living in the New World) in this day and age we no longer should give the benefit of the doubt. There are to many users and abusers out there from whom we need to protect ourselves.<br />
<br />
Whose plan is better for solving Acid Reflux in the new world?<br />
A. President Obama’s?<br />
B. Senator Rubio’s?<br />
C. Poland Spring’s?<br />
D. Prescription Medication’s?<br />
E. Reflux Guard© a one time purchase?<br />
F. All of the above or any combination?<br />
Please vote on our fan page.<br />

Acid Reflux can lead to serous problems if left untreated. It requires the consultation of a physician. <br />

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">PART 3 - The final installment</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">How do we keep the acid away from where it </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">doesn't</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> belong?</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">A lot depends on what the culprit or combinations of problems that are causing the reflux. Ideally, the first solution is to address the source so the body heals itself. But that isn’t always possible. Over time we develop bad habits that are hard to break. Dr. Phil said it best, when he said; “We don’t break bad habits, we replace it with something else.”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Some of these habits are:</span></div>
<ol style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px;">
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Eating too much at one sitting.</span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Eating fatty foods.</span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Eating to close to bedtime.</span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Eating high caloric foods that cause weight gain.</span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Poor sleeping habits and not getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep has shown to cause weight gain.</span></div>
</li>
</ol>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">All of the above will over-stress the esophagus one way or another. Do you have any of these habit? Please comment below. One solution is elevating the head of your bed while you sleep. Doing this helps keep stomach content in the stomach. And if acid should get into the esophagus, it clears it out quicker. Elevating the head of your bed can also aid in snoring, sinus drainage, and can help <span style="font-size: medium;">alleviate</span> the puffiness in your face.</span><br />
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Let’s start with the understanding that the very best person to help you is your doctor. He will ask you questions, and based on your answers, he can help you decide what you need.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">What is Acid Reflux?</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">It is where the Acid <span style="font-size: medium;">Re-fluxes</span> into the Esophagus.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Why does the Acid come into the Esophagus?</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">First we need to explain that there is a valve at the top of the stomach. When that valve malfunctions for a variety of reasons it allows acid to either leak or shoot up into the esophagus. This can be very dangerous and extremely painful for you.<br /><br />Some of the causes of acid entering the esophagus are:</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>

The <a href="http://patients.gi.org/topics/acid-reflux/" target="_blank">American College of Gastroenterology </a>recommends raising the head of the bed by 6” – 10” to combat acid reflux. I, personally, suffered for a number of years not even knowing I had a severe form of acid reflux called GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. Finally, I went to my doctor who informed me of this condition and recommended a specific diet, weight loss, raising the head of my bed, and (easiest of all) popping a pill. In my case, the pill helped somewhat but didn't completely help my nighttime reflux; the medication manufacturers actually advise you to lift the head of the bed.<br />
<br />
I suffered for many more years before I actually figured out how to lift the head of my bed in a simple, safe, practical manner. I designed Reflux Guard© because the medication, which I had expected to be the panacea to my problems, didn't help enough at night. Although I didn't expect much, by the second night, I started to feel better and didn't suffer from nighttime reflux. Within a week I was a different person!<br />

I suffered for many years before I actually figured out how to lift the head of my bed in a simple, safe, practical manner. I designed Reflux Guard© because the medication didn’t quite help with nighttime Acid Reflux. Since the medication wasn't working and I was still in agony, I needed to figure out how to get some sort of relief. I never thought Reflux Guard© would be the panacea to my nighttime agony, but I did need to try something different. I hoped for some little improvement so I could get a decent night’s sleep. As it turns out Reflux Guard© worked better then I had ever imagined and now don’t travel without it. By the second night I started to feel better and now hardly ever suffer from nighttime Acid Reflux. Within a week I was a different person.<br />

“Due to the anatomic factors that I discussed in the prior chapter, for some people who are more susceptible, problems can arise when you are in deep sleep (or REM sleep), and when you are on your back. Since all humans are susceptible to the tongue collapsing to various degrees, given the same situation, different people will obstruct more than others.<br />
<br />
For example, if you have no problem sleeping on your back and you get a simple cold, your nose gets stuffed up and due to the vacuum pressures that are created downstream, your tongue can start to fall back, causing you to wake up frequently. This is the reason why you toss and turn when you have a cold. But once your cold goes away, you can catch up on your sleep, and you feel fine again.<br />
<br />
Pregnant women, especially in the third trimester, typically don’t sleep well. This is not only because of the lack of mobility associated with the pregnancy itself, but also due to increased fat deposits in the throat at this time. The latter serves to narrow the airway, and creates breathing problems that did not exist prior to pregnancy.”<br />
<br />
This is another installment of Dr. Park's book, "Sleep Interrupted", that explains the esophagus--a very complicated and fascinating part of our anatomy. It is the roadway for many bodily functions, but we often take it for granted until something goes wrong. We use it every moment from inhaling and exhaling to swallowing. Unfortunately, when the esophagus malfunctions, it can cause us anywhere from minor discomfort to agonizing misery. <br />
<br />
In today's installment of "Sleep Interrupted" we will explore the simple complications involving how the position of the esophagus and breathing pathway can easily cause Acid Reflux, which, in turn, can cause damage to the esophagus.<br />
<br />
The esophagus is basically a tube for eating, drinking, and breathing. If this tube closes down during sleep it can cause a vacuum in the stomach. This vacuum can interrupt the processing of the stomach contents and their natural progression downward and lift acid, bile, and other stomach contents back up into the esophagus. The power of this vacuum is such that even a healthy stomach and sphincter valve (the valve that keeps acid from entering the esophagus) may not keep the contents of the stomach in the stomach. When the stomach contents come up, it can cause severe damage to the esophagus and/or lungs, which can cause caustic burning and choking, that might even require hospitalization.<br />
<br />

<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Dave Ramsey's theory of “The Debt Snowball Plan” can be applied to weight loss and Acid Reflux. The strategy is to multiply the effect of small gains which will then “snowball” into large gains. Recent studies show this method works. </span><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Dave’s strategy makes it easier to bring a person’s debt under control.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><b>How can we apply this strategy to weight loss and acid reflux?</b></span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Let's start with weight loss, which in itself can help mitigate Acid Reflux. Start by identifying a food you eat that is high in calories. Now, plan to replace it with a lower calorie food. Try that for awhile, and then do the same thing with another high calorie food, and so on. You will find that you will begin to lose weight without feeling hungry and losing control of your diet. The keys are preparation and starting small. Once you build momentum, you can take on Exercise, using the same technique. Start with a simple exercise.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><b>How does this apply to Acid Reflux?</b></span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Your Doctor's recommendation will be to lose weight, and we all know that is easier said than done. The Doctor gives you pills, which you have to remember to take. (The only “good” thing about Acid Reflux is that the severe pain serves as a strong reminder to take your pills.) A far easier cure is raising the head of your bed, which <a href="http://www.RefluxGuard.com/" target="_blank">Reflux Guard©</a> accomplishes perfectly, and may eliminate the need for pills. Once Reflux Guard is installed there is not much more to do than to get a good night’s sleep.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">This is where a positive cycle starts. Studies show that a lack of sleep causes weight gain. Therefore, a better night’s sleep can contribute to weight loss. Weight loss in itself helps mitigate Acid Reflux.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">
<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Whatever you do, don't let the snowball melt - keep it rolling. As you do, your task becomes easier, and you feel better and better.</span></div>

<div class="im" style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.917969); font-family: arial, helvetica;">
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br />
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;">
<div>
Recently while online, I found an <a href="http://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/jasper/demotte/benefit-set-for-demotte-native-battling-cancer/article_ee1d9b6f-f0ef-599a-ab92-5b5415adfc50.html" target="_blank">article for a fundraiser</a> for a lady named Dee Nannenga Walstra Burnette, who is suffering esophageal cancer which was probably caused by Silent Reflux. SilentReflux<wbr></wbr> is when there are no common signs of heartburn or acid reflux that the person recognises. A person will find themselves clearing their throat often or will have a problem with hoarseness. There might be a feeling of a lump in the throat or difficulty swallowing. Yet another symptom is a chronic cough. Since these symptoms are so different than the typical symptoms of acid reflux, people are not aware that they are having a problem with acid reflux.</div>
<div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;">
While the symptoms might seem different in many ways than normal acid reflux, the issues are the same and so are what you can do to help. While medications can help, so can simple diet changes. Avoid red meat, dairy and fried foods. Losing weight is another way of easing the symptoms. Sleeping on a <a href="http://www.refluxguard.com/" target="_blank">Reflux Guard</a> can also help with a kick start to losing weight. Since Reflux Guard promotes a better night sleeps by elevating the top of the bed and keeping the acid in stomach and out of the esophagus, making sleep easier. Poor sleep attributes to weight gain in many ways. It can cause a person to eat poorly, by grabbing comfort food or going for a a sugar or caffeine jolt. But not getting enough sleep, also, throws the body's hormones, especially Ghrelin and Leptin, out of whack. These hormones tell the body when to go eat and when to stop eating. So improving sleep, can cause weight loss, and weight loss can improve the Silent Reflux symptoms.</div>

Today I saw America’s hero, Chesley Sullenberger affectionately know around the world as “Sully” who was promoting his new book “Making a Difference”. If you don’t know Sully, he was the<br />
pilot that safely landed a plane in the Hudson where everyone survived. He also mentioned changing the trajectory of people’s lives. If the trajectory of his plane didn’t change the trajectory of peoples’ lives, I better google “trajectory”.<br />
<br />
Well, this got me thinking about my life, over the last 20 plus years on how my inventions made a difference, and in many cases, changed the trajectory of many people’s lives. My very first invention was a retractable syringe, patented (<a href="http://www.google.com/patents/US4900311" target="_blank">#4,900,311</a>) in 1990, and I’m proud of the fact that President Bill Clinton signed a law in 2000 requiring the use of safer syringes. His signature changed the trajectory of many lives.<br />
<br />
My current ventures are in making a difference in peoples’ lives: www.DoTheRightThingAmerica.com and www.RefluxGuard.com . At Do The Right Thing we developed a decision cycle that helps people<br />
make better less stressful decisions. Our lives are shaped by our decisions.<br />
<br />
At Reflux Guard© we educate on how a simple change such as our very simple product could easily change the trajectory of your health and quality of life.<br />

<br />
What I realized was that there are some people who prefer to sleep only on their sides or their stomach.Some absolutely cannot sleep on their backs, and must sleep in the latter positions in order to breathe properly. I concluded that what was happening in these situations was that being forced to sleep on their backs for the first time in decades after surgery or another medical procedure resulted in an inability to breathe properly. This, in turn, placed stress on the heart, increasing their risk of heart attack. The critical issue here is that it’s during REM sleep that the muscles of the throat are most relaxed. If susceptible people are forced to sleep on their backs, they can no longer adjust in a hospital situation by changing their sleeping position. They are simply forced to sleep on their backs as best they can. This realization led to yet another sleepless night for me. The implications were enormous.<br />
<br />
Both these events prompted me to think about other curious things I had observed in the previous few years of practice. Almost every patient with a sleep-breathing problem such as UARS or OSA had some degree of throat acid reflux. Furthermore, many of these same people preferred not to sleep on their backs. The kind of acid reflux that we see in an ear, nose and throat practice is different from the typical heartburn acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). When the acid reaches the throat, it is called laryngopharyngeal reflux disease, or LPRD. In most cases, LPRD is silent,the only symptoms being throat clearing, post-nasal drip, a lump sensation in the throat, hoarseness, cough, choking, or difficulty swallowing. This is probably one of the most common conditions that an ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor encounters every day.</blockquote><br />

Did You Know Reflux Guard Could Save Your life?<br />
<br />
Based on Dr Park’s observation “Almost every patient with a sleep-breathing problem such as UARS or OSA had some degree of throat acid reflux.” You will see further in the book even a closer direct relationship between snoring and acid reflux. Both could be life threatening for many reasons. It could reduce the quality of life, effect how you feel(groggy and dragging all day long vs. being refreshed), how you react, your relationships,job, health, and safety, etc.<br />
<br />
These two paragraphs clearly bring up a which came first scenario, the egg or chicken;please forgive me I forget, or is that the chicken or the egg?. Who cares, lets ask a more pertinent question, which came first acid reflux or the inability to breathe properly. Again, who cares. The solution is Reflux Guard, a simple device specifically designed to deal with both problems. Reflux Guard goes under you mattress and is specifically designed to adjust within medically approved guidelines. <a href="http://www.refluxguard.com/">Reflux Guard</a> is the only wedge in its price range and ease of use that addresses what concerns Dr. Park.Debi Gerharthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02902407919689026647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6647517355825801467.post-71770199347064635432012-05-08T05:07:00.002-07:002012-05-08T05:36:31.004-07:00How Acid Reflux can interrupt your sleepThis is part of a series of posts from <a href="http://doctorstevenpark.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">“Sleep Interrupted” by Dr. Steven Park</a> a John Hopkins trained ENT. We strongly suggest understanding your condition and “Sleep Interrupted” clearly explains why proper breathing is so important to our wellbeing.<br />
<br />
Getting a good night’s sleep and waking up rested increases your productivity and alertness therefore lessening your chances of injury or death.<br />
<br />
<br />
<blockquote>“For example, with total upper airway obstruction, a tremendous vacuum effect is created in the chest and throat, literally sucking up stomach acid into the throat. There are many other proposed mechanisms for this condition, such as a relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, which normally prevents stomach contents from regurgitating into the esophagus. There are also numerous studies that suggest that acid in the throat can aggravate airway collapse merely by numbing the protective airway reflexes present in normal people. These pressure sensors in the throat can detect when there is impending collapse and send a signal to the brain to tighten up throat and tongue muscles.<br />
<br />
When acid is present in the throat it can cause more swelling of the delicate surrounding tissues, which promotes additional throat collapse, thus further aggravating this vicious cycle. A recent study suggests that for people who snore, the tremendous soft tissue vibrations caused by snoring can numb or deaden these pressure receptors, worsening any pre-existing upper airway obstruction.” “Sleep Interrupted” by Dr. Steven Park</blockquote><br />

<br />
In many cases of Acid Reflux people suffer and don’t even understand what is happening to them. Understanding the above can be instrumental in helping your doctor help you with what could be a very painful and serious condition.<br />
<br />
Sleeping flat on your back can collapse your airway starting a secondary cycle of Acid Reflux, while sleeping on an angle by using <a href="http://www.refluxguard.com/home.shtml" target="_blank">Reflux Guard©</a> can be instrumental in unwinding this cycle and possibly even help with the initial issue all without medicine and its side effect.Debi Gerharthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02902407919689026647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6647517355825801467.post-19819774910717171592011-04-12T10:16:00.000-07:002011-04-12T10:19:47.160-07:00Study Show Strawberries Cut Risk of Esophageal Cancer<div>“<b>Study Show Strawberries Cut Risk of Esophageal Cancer</b>”</div><div><br /></div><div>Is there great news just around the corner? The Wall Street Journal, April 7, 2011 recently reported on a study showing that freeze-dried strawberries slowed the growth of pre-cancerous cells in the esophagus. </div><div><br /></div><div>Studies in rats also show that the intake of freeze-dried strawberries significantly inhibited tumor growth. </div><div><br /></div><div>Every year about 16,000 new cases of esophageal cancer are diagnosed. Esophageal cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the US. Unfortunately, esophageal cancer is one of the worst, having some of the lowest survival rates of various cancers. </div><div><br /></div><div>In a small study of 36 participants who ate freeze-dried strawberries, 29 showed a decrease in the histological grade of the pre-cancerous lesion of the esophagus. Head study researcher Dr. Tong Chen asserted that further testing is necessary to confirm the results. Dr. Chen also stated that it isn’t clear what anti-cancer agent causes the strawberries to have their beneficial effect.</div><div><br /></div><div>Dr. Chen noted that freeze-dried strawberries have 10 times the ability to prevent esophageal cancer than fresh strawberries.</div><div><br /></div><div>Esophageal cancer cases usually progress in the following order of symptoms. The first warning sign is usually chronic acid reflux. The constant assault of stomach acid rising into the esophagus causes the lining of the esophagus to actually change. This elevates the situation to a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett’s Esophagus. </div><div><br /></div><div>People suffering from acid reflux need to take appropriate steps and prevent this process from happening. They should see their physician who will possibly recommend medication, but most likely will instruct them to eat properly, lose weight, lift the head of the bed, and commit to other healthy lifestyle changes.</div><div><br /></div><div>In the next blog post, we will discuss various lifestyle recommendations you can follow to prevent esophageal cancer. </div><div><br /></div><div>Help us save lives, please tell others you care about Reflux Guard and come back often for updates about esophageal cancer, acid reflux and general health.</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you,</div><div><br /></div><div>The Reflux Guard© Team</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Esophagus</div><div>Esophageal cancer</div><div>Acid reflux</div><div>Barrett’s esophagus</div><div><br /></div>TommyShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14535095104576571963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6647517355825801467.post-84727395574257487712010-12-23T20:53:00.000-08:002010-12-24T09:52:26.923-08:00Why are Proton Pump Inhibitors used for Acid Reflux If There are Other Drugless Options?<div>Common sense tells us: “Why put a drug into our system if we can relive the unwanted medical symptoms without it?” But, the reality is that medication is a quick, convenient fix. It is easier and quicker to pop a pill than to do most other things.</div><div><br /></div><div>As we all understand, lifestyle changes such as eating right and losing weight are the best long-term methods to deal with acid reflux. (However, if the problem is serious, everything should be done with the guidance of a physician.)</div><div><br /></div><div>Why isn’t everyone treating acid reflux with a lifestyle change? The answers are that it is difficult to make eating changes, losing weight is difficult, unpleasant, takes time, and most people fail. A pill is quick and effective but most likely to not be the best long-term solution. </div><div><br /></div><div>If PPI’s (Proton Pump Inhibitors) are not the long-term solution and lifestyle changes are hard, what is left? I will share my story: Many years ago, I was in that unhappy position and serious bad news motivated me to lose significant weight while taking a PPI. I continued to suffer terribly. One of the things that I didn’t try was “raising” my bed. I couldn’t figure out a simple solution, so just like other lifestyle changes, it wasn’t done. The agony was very intense (I was up half the night 3-4 nights a week coughing and choking, and my throat and mouth burning.) I finally decided that I couldn’t live that way any longer and had to figure out a solution that I could implement. </div><div><br /></div><div>I remembered all the things the doctor rattled off on what I needed to do. The easiest and quickest thing I recalled was raise the head of the bed. (I wish my doctor had emphasized and underscored this solution when he first mentioned it.) He may have told me how important it was to raise my bed, but my mind somehow overlooked his advice. I finally figured out how to implement the solution, and to my amazement, after the first few nights I knew this really works! The change was immediate and the solution felt like a miracle.</div><div><br /></div><div>I eventually developed an easy-to-install, relatively inexpensive, long-lasting device. I call it Reflux Guard©. It will almost certainly help you as it has helped me.</div><div><br /></div>TommyShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14535095104576571963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6647517355825801467.post-89661997434298218742010-11-24T18:29:00.000-08:002010-11-24T18:30:27.957-08:001st Blog to Educate on the Seriousness of Acid Reflux.This is the launch of our Educational Blog on the subject of Acid Reflux, the effects of which can range from minor pain and inconvenience to fatal cancer. My chief aim is to bring awareness and understanding of this condition to the attention of those who suffer from Chronic Acid Reflux.<br /><br />One in four people suffer from acid reflux in one degree or another. Acid reflux is quite harmless in some cases, but can be life threatening in others. (Keep in mind that Esophageal cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the United States.) One of the virtues of your pain is that it may be telling you, “Stop what you are doing to your body!”<br /><br />Sometimes acid reflux or heartburn can mask, or be caused by, other serious conditions and that is why, if you suffer from such a condition, you must put yourself under a doctor’s care. Any information you obtain here, or on our site, is not meant to be a substitute for seeing your doctor.<br /><br />Now, the good news: there are things you can do to mitigate acid reflux. There are readily available medications, as well as easy or difficult life-style changes, which are effective. Some medications that can be used when the pain begins, while others can be utilized preemptively. Of course, many medications can cause <a href="http://http//www.suite101.com/content/side-effects-of-proton-pump-inhibitors-for-gerd-treatment-a242067">serious side effects</a> and should not be used long term without proper medical supervision.<br /><br />Attacking the acid reflux problem early can prevent your mild condition from becoming a serious threat, which may require prolonged or drastic curative action later. (Even if you do not personally suffer from Acid Reflex symptoms, I suggest that you pass this on to family or friends who may have this problem.)<br /><br />Next week we will discuss some symptoms of acid reflux, and the progression of acid reflux disease. I will attempt to explain why it is important to treat this common condition as early as possible.<br /><br />Please tell your friends and stop by every week for a new post.<br /><br />The best questions and topics will be addressed by our medical liaison Mark Vaynkhadler, MD each month.<br /><br />Thank you,<br /><br />TommyTommyShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14535095104576571963noreply@blogger.com
